Linda,

I agree with you. I am amazed how easily available the alternatives are yet manufacturer neglect a large segment of people who refrain from Animal products. This is specially true for drugs and food supplement manufacturers who make so many gel caps with gelatin without a vegetarian alternative.

According to my understanding, there is no such thing as vegetarian gelatin unless it is qualified by something like Agar-Agar or Seaweed which are vegetarian source of gelatin-like food substance.

Thank you very much Sabeen for your detailed and well researched explanation.

In general if a product is manufactured with local ingredients in a Muslim country I am not too worried about it.

Most of the vegetarian product are safe but it still depends on ingredients as Alcohol is considered vegetarian but it is not OK in Halal Food.

Always read the ingredients of products coming from a non-muslim country.

Do you know where the AlMaria Flavor milk produced and packaged?

From the description here:
http://www.food-info.net/uk/e/e120.htm

E120 seems doubtful as it comes from Insects.

Alaykum Salaam Eja,

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunset_Yellow_FCF
"It is a synthetic coal tar and azo yellow dye useful in fermented foods which must be heat treated. It may be found in orange squash, orange jelly, marzipan, Swiss roll, apricot jam, citrus marmalade, lemon curd, sweets, hot chocolate mix and packet soups, trifle mix, breadcrumbs and cheese sauce mix and soft drinks."

It seems that this is a coal tar based product which does not come from Animal source so I will not be too worried about it.

E110 seems fine to consume, surely Allah knows best.
Ali

Salam...

Code E110 is for colouring purposes...if i'm not mistaken it is yellow colouring... In the vege society list, code e110 was not mentioned. So, which list must i refer to?? Many snacks in Malaysia contains this type of ingredients... I checked with Jakim e-halal, one of the snacks with that E110 code, was halal, but in the present the company did not renew their halal certificate yet. I'm worry about food colouring now... as my husband and i like to cook and bake. We use star brand colouring... but there's no code printed in the ingredients... any suggestion on how to solve my worries????

Khansa, I can only comment on laughing cow cheese available in UK which is not suitable for vegetarians - so I presume not halal as well.

Their site says "Currently, The Laughing Cow cheese triangles and Cheez Dippers cannot be guaranteed suitable for vegetarians. However, Giggles is suitable for those following a vegetarian diet."

I just ate some of the Junior Mints. And I checked the ingredients and it has gelatin! So now I am going to throw them away! Somewhere online it said there are vegetarian/vegan Junior mints, than have a substitute for gelatin called Agar only in the UK and Canada. But this is Canada, and it says Gelatin!
Anyways, thanks for the info, on which one of these are halal and haram and from what animal.
