More about E numbers from VRG

In an earlier entry, I quoted an email I received about pig fat and e numbers. A lot of people expressed interest in that entry and some commented on it so here is what VRG says about the E-numbers:

What are “E” numbers?

There are different words for different food ingredients across the world. In Europe, some food ingredients are noted as “E” numbers. Those that vegans and vegetarians will want to avoid include:

* E120 – cochineal (red food coloring made from crushed beetles)
* E542 – edible bone phosphate
* E631 – sodium 5′-inosinate
* E901 – beeswax
* E904 – shellac
* E920 – L-cysteine hydrochloride

Ingredients with the following “E” numbers may be animal derived: 101, 101a, 153, 203, 213, 227, 270, 282, 302, 322, 325, 326, 327, 333, 341a, 341b, 341c, 404, 422, 430, 431, 432, 433, 434, 435, 436, 470, 471, 472a, 472b, 472c, 472d, 472e, 473, 474, 475, 476, 477, 478, 481, 482, 483, 491, 492, 493, 494, 495, 570, 572, 627, and 635. E901 – beeswax most likely is not a problem

  15. Recently, Lays Pakistan has regrettably been bearing the brunt of various emails and consumers have been mislead into believing that E-631 used by LAYS, Pakistan, is a derivative of animal fat.

    SANHA, an International Halaal certification authority has investigated the ingredients used by LAYS Pakistan and can confirm that their ingredients are Halaal complaint. Infact the E-631 used by LAYS Pakistan is derived from TAPIOCA STARCH, a plant based raw material which has been certified Halaal.

    Consumers are advised to be wary of such malicious emails and urged not to circulate any such mail until the information has been verified and confirmed by a reputable expert authority.

    For all Halaal related queries, you may contact the Halaal Helpline on helpline@sanha.org.za

  16. Dear brothers and sisters, I am a Pakistani living overseas and came to know that people in Pakistan are now using ‘YEAST’ instead of baking soda for baking dough at homes to get nice and soft bread. Please make sure that the yeast used there is Halal. It must come from halal sources, either plant or chemical based.
    Jazakumullah Khair!

  17. Lays Masala Flavor having E631 which can never produced from any plant, only from animals,hence, it is haraam.
    Lays Cheese Flavor having E621 & E627. E621 ,The Most dangerous known as MSG , banned in UK and States because it causes neurotoxic and cancer.
    See at youtube about MSG or E621 60Minutes Program report.
